Model Predictive Control of Three-Phase Four-Leg MMC-Based STATCOM Under Nonlinear Load Phase Switching Conditions

Current and power model predictive control (MPC) has been widely performed to control modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in recent years. Using the MPC-based method to control MMCs in high-power applications leads to a high computational burden due to a large number of submodules in the MMC topology. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel controller with lower computational complexity in this paper by combining the conventional average model (AM) and model predictive control (MPC) to control a three-phase four-leg STATCOM based on MMC. The cost function in the proposed model consists of three parts, including output ac currents, circulating currents, and energy stored in the sub-modules. The MMC-based STATCOM structure feeds a nonlinear and unbalanced load energized by two phases. The performance of the proposed control model is evaluated under nonlinear load phase switching conditions. The simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink environment demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control model.
